What Is A Scope of Work?

Our Scope of Work (SOW) is a document we prepare after our initial consultation.. A SOW is where we guide you through the stages of launching a fashion line or developing a garment, focusing on: design, production, and business strategy.

NOTE: After an initial consultation, if you choose to work with us, we develop an initial scope of work personalized to your company's needs; along with an NDA for your protection.

Here's a example of the standard scope of work and the potential cost variables:

Step 1. Initial Consultation & Strategy Development

During our initial consultative meeting, we work to establish the larger operating frame. This means:

  • Understanding your vision and goals (e.g., target market, design aesthetics, product type).

  • Discussing an initial concept roadmap.

  • Identifying the key resources (designers, patternmakers, fabric sourcing) required.

Take Your First Step

Access experts and unlock comprehensive support to move from concept to production and launch.

Step 2. Design Process

Design is where ideas become tangible. After establishing the right scope, we widen our collaboration with the fashion designer to:

  • Translate ideas into sketches and technical designs.

  • Gain feedback and suggestions on trends, functionality, and market appeal.

Cost Variables:
  • Designer fees: Designer fees vary, and typically start at $150 per hour and up. Some designers work based on Collections or Contracts for on-going work, which varies the cost.

Step 3. Patternmaking

The right Patternmaker is critical to the integrity of the fit of your brand. Patternmaking is a process that takes the flats of your design and brings your idea to life in a three-dimensional way.

Patternmakers will work with you from development to production to:

  • Create patterns from the technical designs.

  • Ensure patterns are accurate for the selected materials and garment style.

Cost Variables:
  • Patternmaker fees: Typically go from $200 and up per pattern, depending on complexity.

  • Additional hourly is charged for fittings and modifications

Step 4. Sourcing

Sourcing is one of the most important aspects of apparel making. We are experts in:

  • Helping clients source fabrics that align with their design and vision, considering factors like sustainability, price, durability, and organic composition.

  • Identifying reliable suppliers or mills that offer the best quality to fit your budget.

Cost Variables:
  • Cost of fabrics vary (natural fibers, cottons, linens vs silk, wool, eco-friendly options)

  • Import/export fees, if sourcing internationally.

  • Consultant fees for time spent sourcing and contacting suppliers.

Are Your Ideas Formulating?

Utilize your free consultation for focused space to discuss your idea with experts ready to support the planning and production behind your goals.

Step 5. Sample Production (Cutting & Sewing)

Once we have materials sourced to go along with our patterns, we continue with:

  • Finding and hiring cutters who can precisely cut fabric based on the patterns.

  • Coordinating with a sample sewing service to create prototypes of the garment.

Cost Variables:
  • Cutting fees: Generally $65 and up per style, depending on complexity and material

  • Sample sewing fees: Typically $75 per hour and up, depending on intricacy of the design.

Step 6. Fitting Process

Fittings are an important step in bringing your design further to life. Here, your idea becomes tangible with fit models and feedback on fit.

Let us help you by:

  • Organizing fittings on a fit model (a person with standard body measurements that match the target sizing).

  • Evaluating how the garment fits and drapes on the model.

Cost Variables:
  • Depending on experience and location, fit models are $150 and up per hour and may require a 2-hour minimum depending on agency / model.

  • Rental of fitting spaces or studio costs (if needed).

(NOTE: This is a generalized scope of work offering general information about the apparel process).

Step 7. Sample Adjustments

At this stage, we take feedback and learnings from fitting sessions to:

  • Make adjustments to the sample.

  • Collaborating with the patternmaker to revise the patterns and the sample sewer to modify the garment.

Cost Variables:
  • Alteration costs: Additional fees for reworking the patterns or samples, often ranging from $50 to $300 per adjustment cycle.

  • Labor costs for revised sample cutting and sewing.

(NOTE: This is a generalized scope of work offering general information about the apparel process).

Step 8. Production Planning

Once you are satisfied with your samples, we turn attention toward production. Our role at this stage is to:

  • Guide you through decisions about final production, such as quantities, production timeline, and manufacturing locations.

  • Advise on budgeting and logistics for full-scale production (e.g., minimum order quantities, lead times).

Cost Variables:
  • Depending on the scale of production, manufacturing costs can vary significantly based on labor, materials, and location.

  • Shipping and logistics expenses for production runs.

(NOTE: This is a generalized scope of work offering general information about the apparel process).
